Meander Retreat is located on the cusp of two premium wine regions, the Barossa and Adelaide Hills, and is blessed with the best of both, with the busy Barossa vineyards and cellar doors not far away while surrounded by the quieter picturesque hill country, notably the magnificent native red gum trees that are studded throughout the local pastures.   Meander is positioned on South Australia's Epicurean Way, a drive that explores some of the state's famous wine and food producers.

Wineries

The nearest wine-producing sub-region is High Eden (commencing across the road), where the highly-regarded Eden Valley wines (especially Rieslings) originate.

Some local cellar doors are a fabulous first stop to learn more about local wines.  Here they are listed in order of proximity to Meander, but remember to check opening times on their websites:

Edenmae Estate - cellar door is on the main street of Springton.

Elysian Springs - heading south of Springton on the main road to Mount Pleasant

Max and Me Wines - cellar door is within the Eden Valley Hotel

Poonawatta - just along the main road, north of Eden Valley township

Flaxman Wines - a little off the main road between Eden Valley and Angaston

Henschke - well off the beatan track near Moculta, but famous enough for it not to matter.

Check out the Eden Valley map for other local producers and cellar doors.

Walking Trails

There are lots of back roads in the vicinity regularly used for walking or riding. There is also a structured walking trail, the Lavender Federation Trail, within a few hundred metres from Meander's eastern boundary. This trail is lengthy with various stages, so those wishing to stay at Meander don't have to venture far off the trail to take a break on their journey.
